Laser shooting with Kiara: always a hit!

The laser shooting started with a bang (literally). Kiara, our HR manager, turned out to be the sharpest shot of everyone. Like a true ninja, she maneuvered through the dark maze and hit everyone in her path. Determining strategy with your team and getting to know each other better in a fun and relaxing environment: a direct hit!

Football: fun, rain and lots of sauce

It is common knowledge that there are many football fans within our team. The battle for the best team in the country is often discussed during the break. Time to put those words into action and put our best football foot forward. At the company cup in Grobbendonk, our team achieved a nice 5th place. Like true Messis, our strikers cut through the proverbial mayonnaise and turned the opposition into chicken curry. Our delicious sauces could of course not be missed during the barbecue in the afternoon.

This year we can once again call ourselves a VCDO laureate for the 6th year in a row! Thanks to our continued commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the VOKA evaluation committee rewarded us again this year with the VCDO certificate 2024.

What is the VCDO certificate?

The VCDO certificate (Flemish Charter for Sustainable Entrepreneurship) is awarded to companies that are actively committed to sustainability in various areas, including the environment, society and economy. With Fresh & Saucy Foods we prove that we not only produce delicious sauces, but also try to contribute to a better world.

Our sustainability efforts

We have made many efforts with Fresh & Saucy Foods in the past year to promote sustainability, including:

1. Optimizing waste flows: by recovering internally used packaging, we were able to reduce our waste flow. Better separation of our residual flows ensures more efficient collection and processing. In addition, our water treatment plant was also optimized for better water quality at discharge.
2. Increasing occupational safety: through monthly safety tours and discussions, we were able to identify problems or hazards more quickly and respond to them faster and better in order to increase general safety for our employees.
3. Digitalization efforts: work instructions and cleaning registrations are now offered digitally so that they are available to everyone, easy to find and always up to date.
4. Training plans: by further developing our training plan, we ensure that every employee is entitled to further training. This is done through both internal and external training.

SDGs in practice

We also translate all our efforts back into the specific SDGs, so we started working on, among other things:

• SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure): of course we constantly try to innovate and improve our production environment. This concerns efforts from energy monitoring, to new technologies and employer branding.
• SDG 13 (Climate Action): responsible entrepreneurship by better mapping waste flows, further digitalization, developments of a new sauce range …
• SDG 17 (Partnership to achieve objectives): we very often collaborate with other companies to achieve our objectives. Fortunately, we can rely on a number of very good partners for this.

Thanks to this certificate, we hope to demonstrate that we handle our production responsibly and help build positive change.

Lifelong learning

Our day started with an inspiring training session provided by our quality department. During this interactive training, the focus was once again on the most important points regarding food safety. We had to work individually and as a team to score as many points as possible through an interesting quiz.

After the educational morning, in combination with an evacuation exercise, it was high time to recharge our energy with a delicious lunch. We all jumped on the bus to Hasselt, where a fantastic buffet was waiting for us at Sparkx. At Fresh & Saucy Foods we attach great importance to healthy and nutritious food, so this lunch gave us the necessary energy we needed to start our sporty afternoon.

Time for action!

Armed with renewed energy, we headed to the many attractions and sports facilities that Sparkx has to offer. There are individual sports, duo activities and team-oriented sports that you can practice, so there is something for everyone. But above all, the activities brought us together as a team. We worked together, encouraged each other and overcame every challenge. Ideal to strengthen our team spirit!

After a day full of sports, learning and working together, we returned to Fresh & Saucy Foods. Our team building at Sparkx was not only fun, but also valuable to strengthen ties as a team and get to know each other better outside of the working atmosphere.

We are already looking forward to the next team building experience, laser shooting, bowling, karting, football… it will definitely be a hit again!

The VCDO certificate is an important milestone for our company, as it underlines our commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. As a company, we understand that it is our responsibility to have a positive impact on society and the environment. By participating in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we contribute to global efforts to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an ambitious framework for tackling issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change and more. As a company, we have developed strategies and initiatives to contribute to various SDGs. These include:

1. Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12): We have succeeded in making our secondary packaging more sustainable. The consumption of our plastic wrapping film has decreased by 40%.
2. Partnership to achieve objectives (SDG 17): Through a study in collaboration with our supplier, we have been able to significantly reduce our soap consumption, with a positive effect on our water purification as a result.
3. Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9): By continuing to focus on further digitization, we ensure greater ease of use for our operators. In addition to reducing the paper mill, we now always ensure that they have the right information in the right place.
4. Good health and well-being (SDG 3 and 4): We are increasing the safety of our maintenance employees through a new safety brochure and by focusing on additional training and courses.

The VCDO certification achieved is an appreciation for our sustainability efforts and our efforts to contribute to the UN SDGs. We are proud of our achievements and we will continue to work to strengthen our sustainability efforts and create a positive impact on the world around us.

We would also like to thank our employees, partners and customers for their involvement and support in achieving this certification. It is a joint effort and we are excited to work together towards a sustainable future.

In order to link the pleasant to the useful, we started with a training on our hygiene and quality regulations. Our quality department put together an informative and interactive training, in which every employee was involved to reflect on the most important guidelines.

After a delicious sandwich lunch, it was time to let off steam at BattleKart in Herentals. The slogan of BattleKart is Beyond Reality for a reason. “With BattleKart you don’t play WITH the video game, but IN IT!”, BattleKart is a mix of video games, augmented reality and karting. We competed with colleagues on the digitally projected race track. As the missiles flew down the track, oil slicks were dropped and turbo modes were activated, we tried to complete the most number of laps in the fastest time. From the happy faces and animated conversations afterwards, we can deduce that this was a great success for everyone!

Our team building was concluded in the evening with a cozy winter barbecue, where our delicious sauces provided the finishing touch! It’s great that we get to work together with such a nice team every day!

Just like on the racetrack, Fresh & Saucy Foods is ready to rock again this year. We keep growing, we keep innovating and we keep motivating our employees!

By cycling to work, you enjoy many benefits: cycling is healthy, it contributes to your personal well-being, it is of course good for the environment and for your wallet and above all it is easy, fun and it brings people together.

Fortunately, we could count on a beautiful sunny day on Monday 12 September. So we were also allowed to register a nice number of participants. Each participant was spoiled with a gift box full of healthy treats, a bicycle lock, a light and a fluorescent vest.

Our record holder only came to work for 26km one-way, the shortest only took 2km. We try to make it an annual tradition, on to next year!

Everyone has some old IT or electronic equipment at home that is no longer used, is broken or can be recycled. Companies can deliver their electronic waste to Out Of Use and in return a piece of land is donated to Natuurpunt, on which trees are planted. The participating companies receive a certificate and are invited to plant the trees themselves.

As an SDG pioneer we are happy to support this project. We therefore mobilized all our employees to cooperate and linked the following SDGs to this:

• 3 – good health and well-being: everyone likes to enjoy the beautiful nature and forest around us, for walking, sports or relaxing.
• 13 – climate action: forests are under pressure from climate change, but at the same time they slow down climate change and limit its adverse effects.
• 15 – life on land: through the management of forests we contribute to the protection and restoration of the ecosystem and biodiversity.

Each PC, laptop and server provides 2m² of forest land. For every 4 mobile phones, tablets and hard drives, you again donate 1m² of planted forest in Flanders. So we launched a warm appeal to our employees to clean out their attic, cellar and garden house and to bring in all old IT and electronic materials. This resulted in a very well-filled van, with which we headed for Out Of Use.

Everything is loaded on pallets and carts on site. Afterwards, it is checked what can be reused and recycled. In our case, this resulted in 44m² of new forest land, a result we are very proud of and are happy to participate in!

In November we are all invited, together with our partners, children and grandchildren, to come and plant the saved trees.

With the Voka Charter for sustainable entrepreneurship, each year we draw up a concrete and profitable action plan for our company, our employees, society and the environment.

The action plan helps us achieve the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs provide us with tools to encourage the support of our employees and our partners. In addition, the SDGs contribute to pursuing a sustainable business policy and making our business sustainable!

After a successful three-year trajectory of VOKA Sustainable Entrepreneurship, we can proudly call ourselves a Sustainable Development Goals pioneer, a prominent recognition of the United Nations.

Conscious entrepreneurship

As an entrepreneur you can no longer ignore it: energy-conscious entrepreneurship has become a daily thing. The United Nations has therefore drawn up 17 Sustainable Development Goals to significantly improve the life of everyone on earth. These Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs for short, are subdivided into five themes: planet, people, partnership, prosperity and peace.

Digitization and automation

Covid-19 has accelerated digitization and automation. The pursuit of digitization and automation was in any case one of our priorities. The implementation of digitization and automation both in production and in the office was necessary. By moving from a server version to the cloud version, remote working has never been easier. Another advantage of this digitization is the reduction of errors and the reduction of paper consumption. All data is now always fully available to make the right decisions and priorities at any time, with high-quality monitoring.

Water treatment optimization

One of the objectives was to analyze and optimize our water treatment. Initially, both the waste water and the rainwater were sent through our water treatment plant. This means that our water treatment plant had to work harder and use more chemicals than necessary. To solve this, a separate circuit has been provided so that the rainwater no longer runs over the water purification system. This results in less energy and chemical consumption. At a later stage, it will be examined whether the rainwater can be collected for, for example, sanitary or other matters.

Waste processing

At the end of 2019, we took a closer look at our waste. Waste needs to be sorted better. We succeeded: the residual waste in 2020 has been reduced by about 18% compared to 2019, with the same turnover!
